B. S. Yeddyurappa Biography

B. S. Yeddyurappa is an Indian politician and the 25th Chief Minister of Karnataka. He became the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 30th May 2008. He belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party and is elected from the Shikaripura constituency in Karnataka. In South Indian state, he is the first one to become Chief Minister from BJP party.

He was born on 27th February 1943 Bookanakera village in Mandya district, Karnataka. His parents are Siddalingappa and Puttathayamma. His mother died when he was four years old. After finishing his graduation with a degree in Bachelor of Arts, he was appointed as the clerk in the social welfare department. Later he set up a hardware shop in Shimoga. He married Mythradevi in 1967 and has two sons, Raghavendra and Vijayendra and three daughters Arunadevi, Padmavati and Umadevi. In 2004 his wife fell into a well and died.

His public life started when he was appointed as the secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1970. He was elected as the President of the Taluk unit of the Jan Sangh in 1972. He spent two years in Bellary jail and Shimoga jail from 1975 to 1977 during the emergency period. In 1980, he was appointed as the President of BJP unit of Shikaripur taluk and then Shimoga district in 1985. In 1988, he became the president of BJP of Karnataka state.

He was first elected in the assembly elections of Karnataka Legislature in 1983 and from that time, he represented Shikaripur Constituency six times. He was chosen as the Leader of Opposition in the tenth legislative assembly of Karnataka. His role became significant after helping Janata Dal party’s H. D. Kumaraswamy to bring down the government of Dharam Singh.  Kumaraswamy formed the government with the help of BJP.

In October 2007, when Yeddyurappa’s turn to become the Chief Minster came, Kumaraswamy refused to resign from the post and so BJP withdrew its support. Again they supported Janata Dal burying all the differences and Yeddyurappa became the 25th Chief Minister of Karnataka on 12th November 2007. He was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the Saginaw Valley State University, USA.
