B. R. Panthulu Biography

B. Ramakrishnaiah Panthulu, popularly known as B. R. Panthulu was a south Indian film director, producer and actor who has been associated with Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movies. He is the director of first silver jubilee hit of Kannada film industry, School Master in 1958 which was later remade to many languages. Earlier he was an actor in movies and has also worked as a teacher before coming to film industry. He is known for portraying notable historical figures to celluloid. Sri Krishna Deva Raya, Karnan, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, and Aayirathil Oruvan are his noted movies belonging to different languages.

 

B. Ramakrishnaiah Panthulu was born in the year 1910. After studies, he worked as a school teacher for a short period before coming to film industry. He debut as an actor through 1936 Kannada movie Samsara Nauke produced by Devi Films based in Chennai. He worked aside yesterday actors like M. V. Rajamma, Dikki Madhava Rao, S.K. Padmadevi, and M.S. Madhava Rao. He played the lead role in this movie, an adapted script of a play by the Chadrakala Natak Mandali. 1957 movie Thangamalai Ragasyam marked his director debut. The movie was directed by himself.

 

Most of his movies were produced under the banner, Padmini Pictures and in majority of these movies, T. G. Lingappa remained as its music director. Many actors like Rajkumar, Kalyan kumar, Uday Kumar, Umesh, Saroja Devi and Gangadhar have acted in his movies. He was most active as a director during the 1960’s and a few of his movies in the 1960’s are Makkala Rajya, Kittur Chennamma, Galigopura, Saaku Magalu, Chinnada Gombe, Dudde Doddappa, Yemme Thammanna, Yemme Thammanna, Amma and Gandondhu Hennaru.
