B. P. Sharma Biography 
B. P. Sharma - walking encyclopedia of Jammu and Kashmir was a famous journalist whose name was listed in Limca Book of Records for becoming the oldest working journalist at the age of 92. He established AIR Kashmir and was the first director of All India Radio, Kashmir. He had a long term association with AIR. He has also worked with dailies like Reuters, Times of India, Hindustan Times and The Tribune. He was given the status of minister by the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah following his trace of the lost documents pertaining to the Instrument of Accession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir with India. He has served as a member of the Sahitya Academy for many years and known for the contributions towards the renovation of Dogri language through his research works.
Sharma is better known as the establisher of All India Radio station at Kashmir. He has also worked as a journalist with several leading English newspapers. Sharma became Principal Information Officer of Jammu and Kashmir. He was arrested in 1953 aside Sheikh Abdullah by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad and released only later. Once released, he refused to work with by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad’s regime and joined AIR. He was transferred to Bhopal, Indore and at last reached Kashmir just before his retirement in 1966.
He is known for the research works related to Dogri language. He unearthed several documents to prove that Dogri was an ancient language and also had its own grammar. Thus Dogri was included in the Eighth Schedule. His writings have won him many awards as well. He was familiar with all historic events related to Kashmir and hence known by the title, Walking encyclopedia of Jammu and Kashmir. B. P. Sharma was an active journalist for more than 71 years. He died in 2005 at the age of 97.
