B. Lenin Biography

B. Lenin is a highly acclaimed Indian filmmaker and screenwriter, better known as film editor. Lenin has won five National Film Awards for best editing and film direction, apart from numerous state awards. He works on Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil language movies. In 1994, he shared National award for editing with his long-time assistant V. T. Vijayan for best editing. They received the award for the Tamil movie, Kathalan. The same movie also earned them state award. Apart from Indian language movies, the duo has worked together for one English film, Eli My Friend.

In 1995, he along with Vijayan received National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Editing for his short films, Oodaha and Kutravali. In 2001, he received National Film Award for Best Direction for the Tamil movie, Ooruku Nooruper. Same movie earned him National award for best movie in regional language, Tamil. Apart from these awards, he earned National award once for the short film, Knock-out in 1992 which gave him, National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director.

His father A. Bhimsingh was a noted film director of Tamil and Hindi. His younger brother B. Kannan is a cinematographer. Bhimsingh is a noted film director known for the movies Gopi, Khandaan, aadmi, Loafer, Joru ka ghulam etc. He has also remade many south Indian hits to Hindi and has also made a series of Sivaji Ganesan movies starting with Tamil syllable ‘pa’ like Pasamalar, Pava Mannippu and Palum Pazhavum. Lenin started off his career as an assistant director to his father and has worked with him in several Hindi movies.  

Later he assisted his father in editing movies and also earned experience as a lab technician and sound engineer. Uthiripookkal in 1979 marked his career beginning as a full-fledged editor. Anjali, Mouna Ragam, Nayagan, Kushi, Muthalvan, Karuppampatti and Apoorva Sagodharargal are his noted movies as a Tamil editor. He has also edited many critically acclaimed and National award winning Malayalam movies like Innale, Amaram, Thoovanathumpikal and Manjadi Kuru. ‘Ethanai Konam Ethanai Parvai’ was his debut movie as a film director.
