Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi Biography

Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi served as the 26th Chief Justice of India. Ahmadi was appointed judge to the Supreme Court in 1988. Prior to this appointment he was serving as a judge in the Gujarat High Court. Later he served as Chief Justice from 1994 to 1997. At present he serves as Chancellor at the Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as Member of the American Inn of Laws in 1995, Honorary Master Bencher of the Honourable Society of Middle Temple, London in 1996 and has been nominated for various International Committees like Human Rights violation in East Timor (US), Zimbabwe International Bar Association to review the state of relations between the judiciary, the legal profession and violation of human rights and assisted the judiciary in Liberia (International Court of Justice).

 

He was born on March 25, 1932 in Surat, Gujarat. After completing LLB, he joined the Bar in 1954. He was appointed judge to the City Civil & Sessions Court of Ahmedabad in 1964.  He was appointed as Secretary of the Legal Affairs of the State of Gujarat in 1974, and for the remarkable services provided during this period, he was appointed as the Judge of the Gujarat High Court in 1976. During this period, Ahmadi worked as Chairman of various advisory boards.

 

In 1988, he was appointed as a Justice in the Supreme Court of India. After six years, Ahmadi was appointed as Chief Justice of India in the year 1994 thus becoming only the third Muslim ever to serve as Chief Justice of India. He retired in March 1997. After retirement, Ahmadi became Chancellor at the Aligarh Muslim University.
