Ayan Mukerji Biography

Ayan Mukerji is a popular and successful director associated with Bollywood known for making successful movies with Ranbir Kapoor. Till now he has directed only two movies and both movies met with critical and commercial success – Wake Up Sid in 2009 and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani in 2013. Both the movies earned him Filmfare nominations. He received Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director for Wake Up Sid and his second film earned him a nomination for Best director. A member of the famous Mukherjee-Samarth family, he currently plans to remake his uncle’s super successful film – Love in Shimla released in 1960. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. He has already announced another project with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhat playing the lead roles.

Ayan Mukerji belongs to the fourth generation of Mukherjee-Samarth family. He is the son of Deb Mukherjee, a film actor known for the movies – Mein Tulsi tere angan ki, 'Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool' etc. Ayan is the grandson of Sashadhar Mukherjee, the owner of Filmalaya studios. His uncles Rono Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, Shomu Mukherjee and Shubir Mukherjee are also associated with Bollywood. In fact their home production company - Filmalaya studios has produced many successful films with Joy Mukherjee, a top romantic hero of 1960s. Bollywood actors like Mohnish Behl, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Tanisha – members of Mukherjee-Samarth family are his cousins. Actresses Rani Mukherjee and Sharbani Mukherjee are his second cousins. Bollywood actresses Nutan and Tanuja are his aunts.

Ayan Mukherji made his directorial debut at the age of 26 with the critically acclaimed film – Wake Up Sid in 2009. The movie starring Konkana Sen sharma and Ranbir Kapoor was also a box office hit. Its melodious songs also were well received. Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani was also a musical hit. He worked as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowarikar for the movie, Jodha Akbar before his directorial debut.
