Ashwini Akkunji Biography
Ashwini Akkunji is an Indian athlete who is talented in 400 meters. She has won gold medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2010 Asian Games. She has received Rajyotsava Prashasti Award given by the State Government of Karnataka.
Ashwini was born on 7th October 1987 in Siddapura in Udupi in a Kannada speaking family. Her full name is Ashwini Chidananda Shetty Akkunji. Her father’s name is B. R. Chidananda Shetty and her mother’s name is Yashoda Shetty Akkunji. She has one sister named Dipti and one brother named Amith. She is employed at the Indian Railways.
As a part of the Rajyotsava Award she got cash payment of one lakh rupees and 20 gram gold medal with priority in the house allotment by the Bangalore Development Authority. In July 2011, she was caught for using drugs during the Asian athletics championships in Kobe in Japan and was suspended and banned for one year by NADA.
Later the International Association of Athletics Federations appealed in the Court of Arbitration for Sports and the ban was raised to two years. She was to suffer along with 5 other athletes Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, Jauna Murmu, Tiana Mary and Priyanka Panwar.
