Ashok Singhal Biography

Ashok Singhal was a senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader from Agra. He was an international working president of the organization for more than 20 years. Singhal was also a trained vocalist in Hindustani music, and a student of Pandit Omkarnath Thakur. Singhal was a key organiser of the first VHP Dharma Sansad in 1984 held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi and was the key architect of Ramjanmabhoomi movement following the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. He passed away on 17th November at Gurgaon near Delhi aged 89.

 

Singhal was born in Agra in 1926. He completed graduation in Metallurgical Engineering from the Benaras Hindu University Institute of Technology in 1950. He got associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since 1952 and became fully associated with the organization soon after graduation. Becoming a pracharak, he worked in different parts of north India and also served as prant pracharak for Delhi and Haryana. In 1980, he became joint general secretary and later promoted to general secretary and the working president till the end of his life.

 

Singhal was at the forefront of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) campaign for a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. VHP is an affiliate of the BJP's ideological mentor RSS. Singal was associated with VHP when it built 200 temples for dalits. On October 20 Singhal was admitted to Medanta and later moved to Delhi from Allahabad. Though he was discharged on November 11, his condition deteriorated once again. He took his last breath at a hospital in Gurgaon near Delhi on 17th November.
