Ashok Patki Biography

Ashok Patki is a National award winning music composer associated with Marathi entertainment industry. He shot to fame after compositing the song on National integrity - "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara”. He also composed the song for Literacy mission - "Purab Se Surya Uga". Both these songs are quite nostalgic for those who watched Doordarshan Channel in the 1980s. He composes song for films, theatre as well as TV soaps. In 2006 he won National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the Konkani film - Antarnaad. Patki has also composed over 5000 jingles. In 2012 he released his autobiography work - "Saptasur Majhe", which illustrates his professional life.

 

Patki was born on 25 August 1941 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He has three siblings. Though he completed his secondary schooling in Gopi Tank Municipal School, he showed less interest in studies. Instead he was drawn towards music since younger days. So he decided to quit his studies. Surprisingly he didn’t receive many formal training in music. Yet millions loved to repeatedly hear his songs - "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” and "Purab Se Surya Uga". He used to play Tabla and Harmonium since childhood days. He used to practise these instruments with his neighbour, Sudhir Phadke who later went on to become a successful music composer.

 

Ashok Patki was introduced to the world of music compositions by Jitendra Abhisheki, who asked him to compose for children’s stage plays. He also worked with Jitendra as an assistant for a short period with theatre before assisting the doyens of Bollywood music like S. D. Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, R. D. Burman etc. Ashok later got associated with AIR and started his career as a music composer for the devotional album - Gaani- Ekdach Yave Sakhya. He was also fully engaged with music for stage plays in those days. However it was Mile Sur Mera Tumhara (MSMT) which earned him national wide recognition. The song is considered as "The unofficial Indian anthem”. In 2013 he started a music school to promote Sugam Sangeet.
