Ashok Nelson was born and brought up in Thrissur. He did his schooling in Delhi and later at the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, thus becoming an integral part of the city. While at Delhi, he started learning Mridangam from Prem kumar at the age of 4. Once he reached Kerala, he continued the studies with Suresh Kumar. He completed schooling from Kendra Vidyalaya, Pattom and later joined Law College. But he is a lawyer by profession and a musician by passion.

There was one apartment near Thaikkudam Bridge, Thiruvananthapuram where the group of friends started jamming and sharing their passion to music. Band members from Mumbai found the name interesting and it was the vocalist, Piyush who suggested the name - Thaikkudam Bridge for the band. Though Ashok got a secure job at the Law academy, his passion to music prompted him to quit and he was supported by his parents. He started learning guitar only during his days at Law College. He was associated with a band ‘Dhun’ in those days and has composed songs as well.

After studies he joined for sound engineering course in Chennai, where he met Govind and a group of friends. He got opportunity to work with renowned music director M Jayachandran and later, Rajamani, Stephen Devassy and Ouseppachan, which helped him to learn music more in a professional approach.
