Asad Bhopali Biography

Asad Bhopali was a famous poet and lyricist associated with Bollywood. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Hindi languages. He was associated with Bollywood as a lyricist since late 1940s. He joined film industry as a lyricist at the age of 28 and marked his debut in the year 1949. Duniya (1949), Aadhi Raat (1950) and Afsana (1951) are some of his early works. Rona hai to chupke chupke and Armaan lute, dil toot gaya are the memorable songs of Duniya. BR Chopra's Afsana (1951) was his major break to film industry.

 

Asad Bhopali was born in Bhopal in 1921. Asadullah Khan is his birth name. His father was a teacher of Arabian and Persian languages, and he was the eldest among his siblings. He moved to Mumbai in search of opportunity as a lyricist and got his first break in 1949. He was given the first break by Fazli Brothers through the film Duniya, and his songs became indeed popular. Since then he got fully associated with Bollywood.

 

Woh Jab Yaad Aaye, Bahut Yaad Aaye of Parasmani was an evergreen hit. It was a time when the industry was ruled by great poets like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi, Jan Nisar Akhtar and Rajendra Krishan, and it was not easy for him to get opportunities. He also wrote lyrics for B-Grade movies. He penned lyrics for the movies - Mr. X in Bombay, Ustadon Ke Ustad, Aag, Chaila babu, Hum Sab Ustad Hai, Lootera etc.

 

In 1989 he along with Dev Kohli penned lyrics of the musical blockbuster – Meine Pyar Kiya, the movie that is regarded as a trendsetter. Asad penned the lyrics of the song "Dil Deewana” which earned him Filmfare award for best lyricist. He also penned the popular song – “Aaya Mausam Dosti Ka" and both these songs were indeed popular. The movie also bagged Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. Though he was associated with Bollywood for more than four decades he received a Filmfare award towards the end of his career in 1990. He couldn’t accept the Filmfare award as he suffered from a severe paralytic stroke. He died the same year. His son Ghalib Asad Bhopal is also a lyricist with film industry.
