Arvind Kejriwal Biography

Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, social activist and former Indian Revenue Service officer. He is the eighth and current Chief Minister of Delhi. This is his second term as the Chief Minister, after his Party won the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections with a majority, winning 67 out of 70 assembly seats. He is the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian social activist who is fighting against corruption and for greater transparency in Government activities. He was formerly an official of Indian Revenue Service. He came to limelight when he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for activating the Right to Information act in India. He aims at enacting anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill.

 

Arvind was born on 16th August 1968 in Hissar in Haryana. His father was Gobind Ran Kejriwal and his mother was Gita Kejriwal. His father was an electrical engineer and due to his jobs at various places, he had to spend his childhood days at Sonepat, Mathura and Hissar. He studied at Campus School and in 1989 completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur.

 

He started his career at Tata Steel and in 1992 he was working with the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa in Kolkata and in the Ramakrishna Mission and in Nehru Yuva Kendra. In 1992 he passed the Civil Service Examination and joined the Indian Revenue Service. He married his batchmat at National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie named Sunita in 1994 and has a son named Phulkit and a daughter named Harshita and lives in Ghaziabad near Delhi.

 

When he submitted his voluntary retirement in February 2006, he was in the position of Joint Commissioner in Income Tax Department. He worked with other social activists like Goduka, Pandey, Manish Sisodia and Aruna Roy and campaigned for the Right to Information Act. After the law was enacted he spearheaded the awareness campaign for RTI all over India.

 

After his success at the Right to Information Act, he joined Prashant Bhushan, Shanti Bhushan, Santosh Hegde and Kiran Bedi to draft the Jan Lokpal Bill. The India Against Corruption movement declared indefinite fast on 15th August 2011 and on the next day he was arrested along with Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia. He left the jail on 18th August 2011 and started his protests from Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.

 

He was attacked with chappals during his campaign at Lucknow. But still he promotes his ideals through his organization Parivartan and Public Cause Research Foundation. He plans to enter into active politics and contest in the elections.

 

He formally launched the Aam Aadmi Party (abbreviated AAP) on 26 November 2012 after his differences with Anna HazareThe party made its debut in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election with broom as its election symbol, and emerged as the second largest party in Delhi.
