Arupa Kalita Patangia Biography

Dr. Arupa Kalita Patangia is one of India’s best writers of fiction writing in Assamese language. She is a leading feminist too. She is a noted novelist and short story writer. She has published three novels and nine short story collections, besides a children’s novel.  Ayananta and Felanee are her most popular novels and they have been translated to other languages. Mriganabhi, Ayananta, Marubhumit Menaka Aru Anyanya, Kaitat Keteki, Millenniumar Sapon, Phelani and Rongamatir Paharto are other noted works. She has received several literary awards including the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad literary award, Prabina Saikia Literary Award and the Katha Prize. She has worked as an English professor in Tangla College, Assam. She completed Ph.D. from Gauhati University on Pearl S. Buck’s women characters.

 

Arupa Kalita Patangia aka Arupa Patangia Kalita belongs to Assam. She was born in 1956. She has to her credit quite a number of short story collections and several novels. Her works reflect and interpret society in various perspectives. Her works also include women issues and lower classes of society. All women characters of her works are progressive and she believes education can give best to women to advance forward. Her celebrated work – ‘The Story of Felanee’ is a brutally honest tale about the experiences of a woman. The book was translated into English by Deepika Phukan and it was shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award. She extensively writes on woman issues.

 

Nirupama Borgohain and Mamoni Goswami were her contemporaries when she started writing. In her opinion, now more women are coming forward with writing. She believes that the new generation of Assamese writers is very talented and promising. She rejected the prestigious Basanti Devi Award given to the Best Assamese Woman Writer stating that ‘A text is a text, written by a woman or a man.’
