Arun Sarnaik Biography

Arun Sarnaik was a noted film celebrity from Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He was a popular singer and an actor belonging to Marathi film industry. He was also an accomplished Tabla and Harmonium player and also a stage actor. Sarnaik died in a tragic road accident on June 21st 1984 on his return to home after the shooting of the movie Pandharichi Vaari. Unfortunately his wife and one of the kids too died in the accident. He was only 49 then. Ek Lajra na Sajra from the movie Aga Aga Jaali is still one of the popular tracks sung by Arun.

 

He was born in Kolhapur on October 4, 1935 in a music family. He was the son of famous "Maharashtrakokil" Shankarao Sarnaik. His cousin Pandit Nivaruttibua Sarnaik was also an accomplished Hindustani vocalist. Arun was a trained classical singer and a tabla and harmonium expert. His acting debut happened through stage plays and his first released movie was Shahir Parshuram in 1961, five years after his entry as a professional stage actor. Since then he has been associated with Marathi cinema portraying both lead and character roles.

 

As an actor, Arun Sarnaik is best known for his work on Ganane Ghungroo Haravale (1970), Sitam (1982) and Simhasan (1980). He has been regular in Marathi film industry since black and white era of 1960s and has also rendered his voice for many of the movies in which he appeared. Aparadh Meech Kela,    Lavangi Mirchi Kolhapurachi, Gosht Janmantrichi, Goodbye Doctor and Tarun Turk, Mathare Ark are his popular stage plays. He has done playback singing for the movies - Dongerchi Mainaa, Manaacha Mujra, Gharkul etc.
