Archana Biography

Archana is a National award winning South Indian actress. She won best actress award successively for two years – 1987 and 1988 for the movies, Veedu (Tamil) and Daasi (Telugu) respectively. She is one among the four actresses who won this award twice. She forms a group with Sharada and Shobhana to won this award for two languages and only the second actress to get this achievement after Sharada. She is the only actress except Shabana Azmi, to receive this award successively for two years. She is an accomplished Kuchipudi and Kathak dancer also. She is a top favourite of directors belonging to parallel cinema.

Yaadom ki baarat released in the year 1973 happened to be the debut movie of Archana as a child artist. This movie marked the debut of superstar of Bollywood, Aamir Khan also. She took a degree in acting from the Tamil Nadu Institute of Film Technology before she joined movies as an adult actress. She has worked with leading south Indian directors like B. Narsing Rao, Shankar Nag, Balu Mahendra, P. N. Menon and Vamsi and has worked in all south Indian languages also.  She played brief roles in movies of first half of 1980’s. Thammil thammil (Malayalam), Nireekshana and Ladies tailor (Telugu) needs special mention. She played lead role in the critically well acclaimed National award winning Malayalam movie, Piravi released in the year 1989. She has also appeared in Malayalam movies – Yamanam and Sammohanam.

Apart from two National awards, Archana won Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil for the movie Veedu and Nandi Special Jury Award – Nireekshana. She won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Character Artiste (Female) for the movie, Onbadhu Roobai Nottu. A few of her noted Tamil movies include - Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, Sandhya raagam, Puyal Kadantha Boomi and Rettai vaal Kuruvi. She has appeared in a single Bengali movie – Bagh bahadur.
