Anurag Singh Biography

Anurag Singh is a ‘hit maker’ director of Punjabi cinema at present. His directorial ventures - Jatt & Juliet 2 (2013) and Punjab 1984 (2014), both for White Hill Production have found place the Punjabi’s top 5 grossers at box office. The movies are at position 3 and 4 in the chart respectively. Undoubtedly one of the most successful film directors in the history of Punjabi cinema, his place is just behind director Manmohan Singh, who converts good screenplays to successful ventures at box office. He is often referred to as Hit Machine of Punjabi Cinema at present. He directed one Bollywood venture – Raqueeb starring Sharman Joshi, Tanushree Dutta and Jimmy Shergill, before entering Punjabi cinema.

 

This young director was born in a small village of Kapurthala district, Punjab in 1977. Passion to films prompted him to go abroad to learn more about film making. So he studied in Australia before returning back to work in Bollywood. He studied Media Arts at Deakin University, Australia. Later he worked as an assistant director to Raj Kanwar for several years. As an independent director, he marked his debut with Bollywood venture – Raqueeb starring Sharman Joshi, Tanushree Dutta and Jimmy Shergill in the year 2007. However the movie was panned by critics and was a box office failure.

 

He took a break from directorial ventures and made his second movie three years later. This time he started off with Punjabi movie. Yaar Annmulle - the story of three friends and their college life was a huge hit at box office. Made on a moderate budget of 27 million Indian rupees, the movie collected 62 million, thus becoming one of the top grossers of the year. There was no turning back after that. He has a good friendly relationship with actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, with whom he made 4 box office hits - Jatt & Juliet, Jatt & Juliet 2, Jatt & Juliet and Punjab 1984. Jatt & Juliet and its sequel earned him PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2013 Best Director while Punjab 1984 gave him Critics’ Choice Award, apart from numerous nominations. Disco Singh earned him Best Dialogues award at PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2015.
