Anup Ghoshal Biography

Anup Ghoshal is a prominent singer of Bengali cinema. He is an active politician also. In 2011 he was elected from the Uttarpara (Vidhan Sabha constituency), Hooghly district in West Bengal Assembly elections. He was elected from Trinamool Congress. In 1980 he received National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the Bengali film Hirak Rajar Deshe. Apart from Bengali films he has also rendered his voice for a few other languages including Hindi. Tujse Naraz Nehi Zindegi from Masoom is a very popular song sung by Anup in R. D. Burman’s composition. This song earned him Bengal Film Journalists' Association – Best Male Playback Award in the year 1983. He has also won BFJA awards for Bengali films, Goopy Bagha Phire Elo in 1992 and Sagina Mahato in 1971. Gold Medal in Sangeet Bharati Degree Examination during 1967-68 and Honorary Citizen of Chicago in 1994 are other accolades received by this popular Bengali singer. He has published a book titled, “Gyaner Bhubane”.

 

Anup Ghoshal was born in 1945 in Bengal to Amulya Chandra and Labanya Ghoshal. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost Nazrulgeeti exponents, particularly in the golden era of Nazrulgeeti (1930-1970). He received formal training in music from his mother, Labanya at a younger age. His sisters were also good in singing. He received formal training from gurus - Sukhen Goswami, Manindra Chakraborty and Debabrata Biswas. He graduated from Asutosh College, Kolkata and has obtained a doctoral degree from Rabindra Bharati University.

 

Anup has performed in All India Radio at a younger age. He has studied different genres of classical music including Thumri, Kheyal, Bhjan, Rag Pradhan, Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Giti and Foul songs. Anup became first in Sangeet Bharati Degree exam in 1967-68 and awarded Gold Medal. As a playback singer, his first movie was Satyajit Ray’s “Gupi Gyen Bagha Byen”. He was only 19 at that time. He has sung in movies like - Hirak Rajar Deshe, Goopy Bagha Phire Elo, Kabi, Mohun Baganer Meye, Sagina Mahato, Ajab Gayer Ajab Kotha and Chhadabeshi.
