Anu Garg Biography

Anu Garg is an Indian-American writer and speaker and the founder of online community, Wordsmith.org, which is popular in more than 200 countries. He has authored several books and also works as a columnist of several magazines including MSN Encarta and Kahani magazine. His books are based on language-related issues and he has published three books. A Word A Day - A Romp Through Some of the Most Unusual and Intriguing Words, Another Word A Day : An All-new Romp through Some of the Most Unusual and Intriguing Words in English and The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two: The Hidden Lives and Strange Origins of Common and Not-So-Common Words are his published books. Garg became a naturalized US citizen in 2008.

 

Anurag was born in Meerut on April 5, 1967. He was brought up in rural areas of Meerat where he didn’t get even good schooling. His schooling took place under a mango tree with a few chalk pieces and a blackboard. He learnt only Hindi during his schooling and it was during his college days when he got exposed to books and library for the first time. Garg graduated from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Computer Science in 1988. He later started his career from US.

 

In 1994, he launched a word server which mails out an English vocabulary word and its definition to the subscribers, every day. The server was called Wordsmith; the service, A Word a Day (AWAD). More than 10,000 people joined the site within one year and now more than 4 lakh users across 200 countries. A different word appears on the computer terminal each day along with its definition, its etymology and a quote defining its usage.
