Anoushka Shankar Biography

Anoushka Shankar is an Indian sitar player and composer. She is better known as the daughter of Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar. She is the half-sister of Norah Jones and Shubhendra Shankar (born from the first two marriages of Ravi Shankar). Anoushka Shankar was born in London and brought up in Hindu tradition and her childhood days were split in India and UK. Her mother is Sukanya Shankar. Anoushka is the youngest and first woman nominee in the World Music category for her third album, Live at Carnegie Hall at Grammy awards.

 

She was born in London on 9 June 1981. In the childhood days, she stayed both at Delhi and London. During teens, she lived in Encinitas, California and attended San Dieguito Academy. She graduated in the year 1999 and pursued music as career instead of academic studies. She was trained in sitar at a younger age by her father Ravi Shankar. She gave her first public performance at the age of 13 at Siri Fort in New Delhi. Next year onwards, she started accompanying her father worldwide for concerts. At 16, she signed her first record contract, with Angel Records (EMI). She released her first album, Anoushka, in 1998, followed by Anourag in 2000. Her third album, Live at Carnegie Hall released in 2003 gave her instant popularity as well as Grammy award nominations for the first time. She was nominated at World Music category, the first woman and the youngest musician to receive this honour.

 

Her fourth album was released in the year 2005 - RISE, which received Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary World Music category. In 2006 she became the first Indian to play at the Grammy Awards. In collaboration with Karsh Kale, she released ‘Breathing Under Water’ in 2007. In 2012 she won Best Artist in the Songlines Music Award for her album Traveller. She is also known as a writer and actor. Bapi: The Love of My Life is her biography of her father.
