Anoop Kumar Biography

Anoop Kumar is the middle of three actors of Bengali and Hindi cinema from Ganguly family. The rest two are great actor Ashok Kumar and the youngest one – Kishore Kumar, who himself is a great legend and a great pillar of Bollywood. He has appeared in more than 75 Bollywood films. Yet he is remembered most for the comic movie, Chalti ka naam gadi released in the year 1958. It was for the first time, the three brothers of Ganguly family worked together in a Hindi movie. Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar worked in this comic tale of “a wonderful car” and his future sister-in-law Madhubala also worked in this movie. Madhubala later married his younger brother Kishore Kumar, thus becoming a part of Ganguly family. Though he was a talented actor, he couldn’t make a distinct fingerprint of his own similar to his brothers. Yet people love him to remember alongside the rest two, for the successful flick – Chalti ka naam gadi.

 

Anoop Kumar was born on 9 January 1925 in Bhagalpur, Bengal as Klayan Kumar Ganguly. He was born in a Brahmin family of Kulin Brahmins. His father Kunjalal Ganguly was a lawyer and his mother was Gouri Devi. Anoop Kumar was the third of four siblings. He also had an elder sister, Sati Devi. He entered Hindi cinema following the steps of his elder brother, Ashok Kumar who was a successful hero and singer during 1940’s. During 50’s he moved to supporting roles. Anoop Kumar worked in Fashionable Wife released in 1938. Later he appeared in numerous movies like Dhatri Debata, Sankalpa, Bankalekha, Vidyasagar, Anupama, Harischandra, Sheroo, Dekh kabeera roya and Shymali, till Chalti ka naam happened to him. Another noted movie was Dekh Kabeera roya.

 

Later he appeared in numerous movies in supporting roles, Aasoo Bane Angaarey released in 1993 was his last movie. He died on 20 September 1998 in Mumbai, aged 73. Other noted movies include –Parivaar, Love marriage, Tumhare bina, Chori mera naam, Vicoria No. 203, Anhonee, Raat aur din, Kashmir ki kali, Funtush and Do anjane.
