Anjana Mumtaz Biography

Anjana Mumtaz is a popular actress associated with Hindi and Gujarati movies, known for portraying character roles. Started her film career in the late 1960s, she became active in the industry since early 1980s. She has portrayed numerous ‘mother’ roles, mostly positive ones. Noted young film actor Ruslaan Mumtaz is her son. Do Phool and Mahua are among her early film roles. She was a part of Doordarshan’s iconic series of 1980s – Buniyaad, where she portrayed a supporting role.   

Anjana Mumtaz was born on 4th January, 1941 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She made her film entry in the late 1960s. Sambandh in 1969 is her first credited role as film actress, followed by Mahua the same year. She played female lead aside Aruna Irani in Mahua. She also appeared in a few movies of early 1970s before she got settled with her family life. Though she played lead role in Mahua, and appeared in character roles in Do Phool, Bandhe Haath etc, her career didn’t take off. She got married to Sajid Mumtaz and the couple had one son, Ruslaan Mumtaz who appears in Bollywood films and TV soaps right now.

Anjana returned to film scene in the late 1980s portraying character roles, and since then she is active in the film industry. She has also made appearance in several television serials. She has acted in more than 70 movies, and came to prominence in the 1990s. Slowly she shifted to mother roles. Some of her noted appearances include – Tirangaa, Deedar, Sangram, Dil Tera Aashiq, Dil Hai Betaab, Sabse bada Khiladi, Phool Aur Kaante, Saajan, Chamatkar, Saajan Chale Sasural, Farz Ki Jung, Bhairavi, Dulhe Raja, Dhadkan, Tridev, Bhrashtachar, Koi... Mil Gaya, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi etc. She played Akshay Kumar’s mother in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Govinda’s mother in Saajan Chale Sasural.
