Anil Kumar Gain Biography

Anil Kumar Gain was a mathematician, statistician and educationalist who lived in Bengal in the 20th century. This Indian mathematician is best known for his works on the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient in the field of applied statistics, along with his colleague Ronald Fisher. He is also known as the founder of Vidyasagar University, and named after the social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. Gain was the president of the statistics section of the Indian Science Congress Association. He also served as the head of the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

 

He was born into a poor family in Lakkhi village in Purba Medinipur, Bengal on 1 February 1919. Jibankrishna Gain and Panchami Devi were his parents. He lost his father at a young age. Later he along with his siblings was brought up by his mother who had to face a lot of hardships. He started formal education at the age of eight and showed special interest in English and mathematics. Later he completed graduation in mathematics from Surendranath College, followed by Master’s in applied mathematics from the University of Calcutta with a gold medal.

 

He started his career as a teacher and got married to the daughter of a businessman. He completed PhD in mathematical statistics from Cambridge University in 1950. At that time he came into contact with Henry Ellis Daniels and Sir Ronald Fisher. Once returned to India he continued with his teaching career. His final years were spent at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He worked for the educational projects such as NCERT while working in Kharagpur. For his efforts to the field of education, he is regarded as a popular figure associated with Bengali renaissance.
