Anil Chatterjee Biography

Anil Chatterjee was a popular character artist associated with Bengali cinema for 5 decades since early 1950s. He has appeared in around 150 movies, including a few from Hindi. He has also portrayed many powerful roles as second lead, and also antagonist. He played male lead in Satyajit ray’s one of the greatest works after Appu Trilogy - Mahanagar, where he was paired with Madhabi Mukherjee. He also played the title role of "Deshbandhu Chittaranjan", the biopic of freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das, a role admired by all. He acted with Dilip Kumar in the Bollywood film – Sagina.

Associated with many critically acclaimed and successful directors of the industry, he has been frequently casted by directors such as Tapan Sinha, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Aparna Sen, Amol Palekar, Asit Sen etc. He has worked with Tapan Sinha and Satyajit Ray multiple times. He has been a part of several legendary movies like Meghe Dhaka Tara, Teen Kanya, Kanchenjungha, Deep Jweley Jai, Ajantrik, Ajantrik, Nagrik etc.

He was born on October 25, 1929 in Kolkata and schooling was completed at Delhi. A brilliant student he was the first rank holder of the Senior Cambridge Examinations. He graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. Later he was associated with this institution as an office bearer and member of Alumni Society. He was also associated with state politics and has been elected as a member of legislative assembly of Bengal, as a member of leftist party.

His association with theater began during his college days and he has acted with legendary Utpal Dutt for many college plays. He started his film career with the 1952 movie – Nagarik. He also worked as Assistant director for 1954 film Dhuli, and worked for a few movies. With Kathin Maya in 1961 he became a production manager. He was credited as Anil Chattopadhyay in his early movies.
