Angana P. Chatterji Biography

Angana P. Chatterji is an anthropologist, activist and historian from West Bengal.  She is also an editor of a few books. An anthropologist by profession, her research works are related to her advocacy work in India. She is the co-founder of International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in 2012, where she has been a co-convener earlier. She is the daughter of Indian freedom fighter Bhola Chatterji from Bengal and great-great-granddaughter of Gooroodas Banerjee, an honorable judge. Though she is a permanent resident of the United States, she retains her Indian citizenship and her research works are mainly focused on India.

 

She was born in Kolkata in 1966 to a socialist and Indian freedom fighter Bhola Chatterji and Anubha Sengupta Chatterji and is a descendant of Gooroodas Banerjee, the first Indian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Her childhood was spent in the tense atmosphere of Narkeldanga and Rajabazar in Kolkata. She moved to Delhi in 1994 and later moved to US. She worked as director of research at the Asia Forest Network during her graduation in India until 1997. She holds a PhD in the Humanities from CIIS, where she later joined as a lecturer. Anthropology is her subject. Her professional career as a lecturer began in India in 1997.

 

Known for her research works, she has published research monographs, reports and books. Community Forest Management in Arabari: Understanding Socioeconomic and Subsistence Issues – is her self-published monograph in 1996. In 2009 she published Buried Evidence: Unknown, Unmarked, and Mass Graves in Indian-administered Kashmir; A preliminary report. She has edited several books and publications. Also known as a social worker she was also associated with Narmada Bachao Andolan in 1989 and has also worked in relief camps.
