Anandamohan Bose Biography

Anandamohan Bose was one of the earliest Indian political leaders during British rule. He was a barrister by profession. He is the co-founder of Indian National Association, one of the earliest Indian political organizations, and was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. He is the founder of the City school and City College, Kolkata. In 1874, he became the first Indian Wrangler of the Cambridge University. He was also a prominent religious leader of Brahmoism. His wife Swarnaprabha Devi was the sister of Jagadish Chandra Bose, famous Indian scientist.

 

Anandamohan was born at Jaysiddhi village in Mymensingh District of Bengal on September 23, 1847. His parents are Padmalochan Bose and Umakishori Devi. He passed his matriculation examination from the Mymensingh Zilla School. Later he passed his F.A. and B.A. examination from the Presidency College, Kolkata where he was the topper. . In 1870, he received the Premchand Roychand studentship. In 1878, he went to England for higher education along with Keshab Chandra Sen.

 

He was attached to Brahmoism and Brahma Dharma since his college days. He was officially converted to Brahmo religion along with his wife by Keshab Chandra Sen in 1869. The young members of Brahmo Samaj had difference in opinion with Keshab Chandra Sen in certain matters and its end result was the split of organization into two. Thus Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was founded on May 15, 1878. He was one among its co-founders.  Shibnath Shastri, Sib Chandra Deb and Umesh Chandra Dutta were the other members. He was elected its first president.

 

On April 27, 1879 he founded the Chhatrasamaj, the student's wing of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj movement. In 1879, he founded the City College, Kolkata. He founded the Students' Association, alongside Surendranath Banerjee and Shibnath Shastri. Its objective was the promotion of nationalism among the students.
