Anand Modak Biography

Anand Modak was a popular music director and composer of Marathi cinema and theatre. He was one of the prominent music directors of the industry in the 1990s and 2000s. He died in Pune following a heart attack in May 2014, at the age of 63. His sudden death shocked the whole film fraternity. Lapandav, Dambis, Chaukat Raja, Tu Tithe Mee, Naatigoti, Harishchandrachi Factory and Samaantar are some of his memorable movies. He also composed music for some of Bollywood films like 'Army', 'Bandish' and 'Disha'. 'Dhoosar', 'Dambis', 'Aarambh' & 'Masaala' were his most recent works. Kheliya, Raigadala Jeva Jag Yete, Mahanirvan, Mahapoor, Begum Barve and Chaukatcha Raja are some of his compositions for plays. Yashwantrao Chavan - Bakhar Eka Vadalachi was his last movie, released in 2014. He was active in music world till his death.

 

He was born in Akola where he completed his education. He took first lessons of music from his mother. He began his music career with acclaimed drama Ghashiram Kotwal, as an assistant to Bhaskar Chandavarkar in 1972. Since 1974 he entered into independent music direction. Later Satish Alekar’s play Mahanirvan proved to be the major breakthrough of his career. He was also a bank employee, and worked in Bank of Maharashtra, though left the job later to completely concentrate on to his music career.

 

He composed music for movies, plays, radio plays and devotional music apart from Marathi and Hindi movies. Though associated with filmy music, he was most active in the non-filmy field. Chaukat Raja, Tu Tithe Mee and Harishchandrachi Factory were his most memorable compositions in the recent times, which gave him many awards as well.
