Anand Bhate Biography

Anand Bhate, also known as Anand Ghandharva is a Hindustani classical vocalist. He is also a playback singer of Marathi films. He sang all the tracks of the Marathi film Balgandharva (2011), a biopic for which he won National awards for best playback singer - Male. The raga-based songs of the movie made him immensely popular. Throughout his career, he has toured many countries including US and his success fetched him the title "Anand Gandharva". He has received Balgandharva Gunagaurav puraskar by Bangandharv sangeet rasik mandal and Dr. Prabha Atre award from Gaanvardhan & Tatyasaheb Natu foundation Pune for his contributions to music.

 

Anand Bhate was born in Pune, Maharashtra in a musical family in the year 1971. He inherited the singing tradition from his great grandfather Bhate Buva. Buva was a great vocalist of Thumri and natya sangeet of 19th century. Anand’s father was a great fan of Balgandharva, upon whom biopic was made and Anand recorded all its songs. He was deeply influenced by Balgandharva too. He started formal learning of classical music at the age of 10. He was trained by Chandrashekhar Deshpande. Under the training of Yashwantbua Marathe he learnt a few intricacies of Khayal gayaki. Later he was fortunate to become a disciple of great Bhimsen Joshi, under whom he received training for 15 years. It happened in the year 1988.

 

His first public concert happened in the year 1981 at the age of 10. He performed Balgandharva's gayaki on All India Radio and Doordarshan. He was honoured with the title, ‘Anand Gandharva’ the same year. After that he has given his performance to AIR and Mumbai Doordarshan several times. Anand Bhate, one of the most promising vocalists of present times, belongs to Kirana tradition. His Guru Bhimsen Joshi was a doyen of the Kirana gharana under whom he got privilege to learn music for 15 years. His live performances have impressed great singers like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. He has performed many times at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival held at Pune.
