Amiya Chakravarty (writer) Biography

Amiya Chakravarty was a noted writer and critic associated with Bengali literature. A close associate of Rabindrath Tagore, Amiya served as the literary secretary to Rabindranath Tagore from 1924 to 1933. He excelled as a poet and has edited several poetry works. He was a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for poetry work - Ghare Pherar Din in the year 1963. Also known as an academician he taught literature and comparative religion in India and abroad for more than three decades. In 1970 he received Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contributions to the world of literature and academics.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1901. He graduated from St. Columba's College, Hazaribagh affiliated to Patna University. In 1921 he joined the prestigious Viswabharathy as a student and later became a teacher. He was a close associate of Tagore for more than one decade since then. He also assisted Tagore for his foreign tours during the period 1930 to 1932. Associated with Indian freedom struggle movement, he was one among those who followed Mahatma Gandhi at the famous Dhandi March in 1930. In 1933 he moved to US for advanced studies and completed D.Phil from Oxford University in 1937. Since then he worked as a senior research fellow and teacher for many years in India and abroad.

 

Though he moved to India in 1940 and continued his career as a lecturer, following Indian independence he moved back to US in 1948, where he joined Howard University as an English lecturer. As a writer he continued with his writings and published many columns for several leading journals of England and the USA. His poetry reflected his love towards nature and beauty. Ghare Pherar Din, Dynasts and the Post-war Age in Poetry are some of his literary works. He passed away in 1986.
