Amiya Chakravarty (director) Biography

Amiya Chakravarty was a filmmaker of yesterdays. He was a leading film director of Bollywood known for making movies on social relevant subjects. Daag (1952), Patita (1953), and Seema (1955) are regarded as his best works as a Hindi film director. He along with Devika Rani is credited to giving first break to Dilip Kumar through the film - Jwar Bhata in 1944. He also gave Dileep Kumar one of his major hits in the first phase of his acting career – Daag in 1952 which helped him to bag the first Filmfare award for best actor too. Seema gave Nutan a big break to her acting career and a Filmfare award for best actress while Amiya received a Filmfare award for best story.

 

He was born in Bogra, Bengal of British India in the year 1912. He was married to Saraswati Shastri, younger sister of noted vocalist, Lakshmi Shankar. He entered film scene in the year 1940 as a scriptwriter with Bombay Talkies. Since then he was associated with Bombay Talkies for many years. Bandhan was his debut movie as a story writer which starred Leela Chitnis, Ashok Kumar and Suresh in lead roles. One of the major hits of the year, it was the second highest grosser. The movie was directed by N. R. Acharya.

 

In 1941 he made his directorial debut with Anjaan which starred Devika Rani, Ashok Kumar and David in lead roles. Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar formed the icomic pair of Bollywood cinema in the 1930s and 1940s and Anjaan received praises from audience and critics alike. After that he directed several successful movies for Bombay talkies. The following year he directed Basant. Actress Madhubala played a child artist role in this movie. Associated with film scene till late 1950s, Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) was his last release. The movie includes the evergreen track of Manna Dey - Kaun Aaya, Mere Man Ke Dwaare. He passed away the same year. He was only 44.
