Ambika Chakrabarty Biography

Ambika Chakrabarty was a freedom fighter and revolutionary associated with Indian freedom struggle movement. An activist associated with Bengali Indian independence movement, he later turned a politician of Communist Party of India and has served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He is also remembered for his participation in Chittagong Armoury Raid led by the famous revolutionary Surya Sen. Ganesh Ghosh, Lokenath Bal, Nirmal SenPritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, Binod Bihari Chowdhury, Subodh Roy, Harigopal Bal etc were the major leaders who participated in the raid and Sen got captured and sentenced to death. However his death sentence was later changed to life sentence.

 

He was born in 1892. His father’s name is Nanda Kumar Chakarabarty. While at his younger days, he got attracted by the revolutionary ideas of Surya Sen, and he too plunged into the revolutionary methods to achieve India’s freedom. He became a member of Chittagong Jugantar party, a secret revolutionary group who strived for Indian independence. On 18th April 1930, when Surya Sen led a group of revolutionaries to conduct the armory raid of police at Chittagong Ambika was a group member. Though the group captured arms, it failed to get the ammunition. Later they hoisted Indian flag in the premises before they left.

 

Massive raid was made by British later and they managed to trace the whereabouts of a few of the revolutionaries who participated in Chittagong armoury raid. He was seriously injured on 22 April 1930 by British in a shootout and somehow he managed to escape. But he got caught by British police a few months later. He was given death sentence for his involvement in the incident, along with many of his friends. But it was later changed to life sentence and deported to Andaman Cellular Jail. He got released in 1946.

 

He joined the Communist Party of India after his release and got elected to the Bengal Provincial Legislative Assembly the same year. After Indian independence, he became a member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1952. He died in a road accident in Kolkata in 1962.
