Ambika (old Actress) Biography

Ambika is a former actress of Malayalam screen who appeared in lead role opposite leading stars like Sathyan and Prem Nazir during 1950’s, 1960’s and early 1970’s. Ambika is close relative of Travancore Sisters -Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini and has also participated with them in several dance shows. Like Sukumari, another lady belonging to the same family, Ambika too was inspired a lot by Travancore Sisters and she was initiated to the world of cinema by them as well. Udaya Studio's 'Visappinte Vili' in 1952 directed by Kunchacko marked her onscreen debut and later on, she became one of the most sought actresses of the industry. This super heroine of yesterdays after marriage quit acting and got settled in US after marriage.

Ambika’s aunt was so interested in dances and she promoted young Ambika a lot. In those days, Travancore Sisters too were gaining power in dance field as well as music industry and her aunt asked her to see them as role models. Thus Ambika too reached film industry following the steps of Travancore Sisters. Her first scene was shot at Alappuzha and she reached the place from Thiruvananthapuram. Young Ambika was asked to do a dance and it started the acting career of this actress. She was offered bit roles at first. But she recognized herself to be a talented actress and dreamt to become a successful actress as well.

Soon, she was offered leading roles and she has been one of those rare artists of yesterdays who got roles equal to hero roles. 'Koodapirappu' marked her new beginning as a heroine and its success established her as a leading actress. She appeared in serious roles as a village girl or housewife in most of those movies and has been a part of many family dramas as well. She was mostly casted opposite Sathyan and a few of such memorable roles are Ammaye Kaanaan, Thacholi Othenan, Moodupadam, Mooladhanam and Kayamkulam Kochunni. Ummini Thanka and Nadhi are her noted movies opposite Prem Nazir.
