Amarinder Singh Biography

Captain Amarinder Singh is an active politician belonging to Indian National congress. He has served as the chief minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. He belongs to the royal family of Patiala, Phulkian dynasty and currently serves as the titular Maharaja of Patiala. He is the son of last ruler of princely state of Punjab, Yadavindra Singh and his second wife, Rajmata Mohinder Kaur of Patiala. He is also a Jatmahasabha chief who works for the job reservations belonging to OBC categories. His wife Preneet Kaur is currently serving as MP and Minister of State in the External Affairs Ministry.

His father, the ruler of Patiala, Yadavindra Singh married Rajmata Mohinder Kaur as his first marriage with Maharani Hem Prabha Devi of Saraikela was childless. After the birth of two daughters, the heir to the throne, Amarinder Singh was born in 1942. After studies, he joined Indian National Army in 1963 and served for a short period. He is married to noted politician, Preneet Kaur and the couple has two children. His son, Yuvraj Raninder Singh is also an active politician, known by the name Tikku.

He was inducted into the Congress by Rajiv Gandhi and he contested for the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1980, where he stood up as winner. Following Army action during Operation Blue Star, he resigned from the party and parliament as protest against this act. Then he joined Shiromani Akali Dal and stood for state assembly elections and became minister of Agriculture, Forest, Development and Panchayats. But later he formed Shiromani Akali Dal which merged with Congress. He became President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in 1999 and became Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002.
