Amarendranath Chatterjee Biography

Amarendranath Chatterjee was a prominent revolutionary leader of Indian freedom struggle movement from Bengal. Bihar, Odisha and the United Provinces were the regions where he was active with his movements. He gave assistance to Jatindra Nath Mukherjee (Bagha Jatin) for the revolutionary activities in Poragacha unit of Nadia and was a close associative too.  They were of same age, both born in the year 1879. He was a key-figure in the Indo-German Conspiracy under Jatin during World War I.

 

He was born on 1 July 1879 at Uttarpara, in the Hooghly district of Bengal. He completed his primary education from his village. He did secondary education at Bhagalpur and joined Scottish Church College for graduation. During this time Upendranath Banerjee and Hrishikesh Kanjilal were his classmates who become revolutionaries later. After graduation he accompanied Surendranath Banerjee in his lecture tours across the nation and very soon plunged into national movement.

 

He established the Uttarpara Shilpa-samiti and also gave help to revolutionary Bagha Jatin. Theyformed Chhatra Bhandar which was later renamed as Shramajibi Samabaya. Amarendra met Sri Aurobindo in 1907 who was a revolutionary in those days. He organized many activities to collect funds for revolutionary movement and became a close friend of Bagha Jatin. Their centres also gave shelters to militants from regional units and also became the meeting places to organize their plans.

 

Amarendra closely associated with Jatin’s followers such as Atulkrishna Ghosh, M.N. Roy and Bepin Ganguli in the early 1910s. Thus he was a key-figure in the Indo-German Conspiracy under Jatin during World War I.  Jatin got killed by British. Though he was not arrested he was given a warning, “You are a fish of the deep water!” He paid visit to Sri Aurobindo who has become a saint. He returned to Bengal and got associated with Chitta Ranjan Das and Swarajya Party. He joined the Radical Democratic Party in 1945 and died in 1957.
