Allauddin Khan Biography

Allauddin Khan was one among the first group of artists to win Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1954. He was an expert in sarodiya and many other musical instruments. He was an excellent vocalist and composer as well. He was one of the most renowned music teachers of the 20th century in Indian classical music. His children, Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi later became big names in Indian classical music. Pandit Ravi Shankar who married his daughter, Annapurna was also his disciple. Nikhil Banerjee, Vasant Rai, Pannalal Ghosh, Bahadur Khan and Sharan Rani were also his disciples. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan in the year 1971 by India Government. He renovated Maihar gharana and his disciples, Annapurna and Ravi Shankar became experts in it. Raja Hossain Khan was his nephew.

 

Allauddin Khan was born in 1862 in Bengal as the son of Sabdar Hossain Khan. He learnt primary lessons of music from his brother, Fakir Aftabuddin. At the age of 10, he fled from home and joined a jatra band. Later he went to Kolkata and became the disciple of Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya for 12 years. Then he became a disciple of Amritalal Dutt - a close relative of Swami Vivekananda. He learnt European classical violin also. Once he happened to listen Ahmed Ali Khan playing sarod in a concert and very soon, Allauddin became his disciple as well. Later he became the court musician of Brijnath Singh Maharaja of Maihar Estate in Central Province. The name ‘Annapurna’ was given to his daughter by this Maharaja. It was during this time he reshaped the Maihar gharana of Indian classical music.

 

Allauddin stayed at Maihar from 1918 to his death. He founded Maihar College of Music in 1955. He received Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1952 and Fellowship in 1954, when it was announced for the first time. Khan was fond of compound ragas and has created many new compositions. Arjun, Bhagabati, Bhim, Bhuvaneshvari, Chandika, Dhabalashri, Dhankosh, Dipika, Durgeshvari, Madhabsri, Madhavgiri, Malaya, Manjh Khamaj, Meghbahar, Rajeshri, Shobhavati, Subhabati, Sugandha and Surasati are only a few drops in the vast ocean of music composed by Allauddin.
