Akshaya Mohanty Biography

Akshaya Mohanty was a musician, lyricist and singer from Orissa. He has contributed to music of Orissa in the form of film music, Bhajanas, Odissi, folk songs, ballads and light music on contemporary themes. He has received State award for best playback singer seven times, State award for best composer twice and Jayadeva Award: The highest state award in movies. Apart from these honours, he has also received numerous awards from Cine critic Association of Orissa. He rendered his voice to about 160 Oriya movies and composed music for 75 movies as well. His recorded, Patent Medicine - win the best radio drama award from All India Radio.

 

Akshaya was born on 12 October 1934 as the son of Bichitrananda Mohanty and Subarna Manjari Mohanty at Bankimundai, Kendrapara. Akshaya had no formal training in music. He joined government service at the age of 22. He worked in Cuttack, but quit the job after 7 years to concentrate on to music. He became an approved lyricist in All India Radio, Cuttack in 1956 and in 1959, became an approved composer. He got married in 1967.

 

Akshaya recorded his first song Gadiala Bhai Dharichhi Sura Re in 50s. As a playback singer, his first recorded song was Gori Gori Gori for Oriya movie, Maa released in 1959. Later he worked in about 160 movies as a playback singer. In 1965, he has composed music for the movie Malajanha followed by Rakata Talamala which became popular. As a music composer, he has given music to 75 Oriya films. He is known for his experiments with music for giving special sound effects. Compositions of Kanchi Abhijana, Randipua Ananta, and Konaraka Gatha are placed under cult classics of Oriya music. 'Raja Jhia Sange', 'Rakata Tala Mala', 'Saata Daria Paare', 'He Phaguna Tume', 'Chakori Jhara'anaa Luha' and 'Kene Gheni Jauchha Jagannathanku' are a few of his popular compositions.
