Ajith Kollam Biography

Ajith Kollam is a noted character artist associated with Malayalam and other south Indian languages. He mostly essays negative roles onscreen. He made his directorial debut with the film, 'Calling Bell' in 2013 which told the story of a thief with a good heart.  He wrote the script and also played the lead role in the film. As a character artist he has essayed over 500 character roles till now. He started off as an assistant director under renowned director Padmarajan in 1980 before the director himself prompted him to start an acting career, in which Ajith succeeded. Padmarajan commented that he had expressive eyes.

Ajith has earlier worked under director Padma Rajan in the early 1980s as an assistant director. Ajith regards him as his mentor. He started working under the director since 1980. He wanted to learn film direction then. But one day the director told him that he has already 10 assistants working under him and that he would call him when necessary. At that time Padma rajan also put forward another suggestion. He asked Ajith, why can’t he act in films and the director himself offered him a film role. That’s how Ajith started with acting in movies.

In 1986 he played lead hero in one movie, Agni Pravesham. The movie was a flop which almost ended his career as an action hero. Later he acted in villain and grey shaded roles. In fact he got type casted as a henchman. Teja Bhai & Family, Simhaasanam, Avan Chandiyude Makan etc are among his recent roles. He has acted in more than 500 films. When he scripted his debut directorial venture, he was well appreciated by famous lyricist Chunakkara Ramankutty, whom Ajith respects a lot. Chunakkara Ramankutty also penned lyrics for the movie.
