Ajit Wadekar Biography

Ajit Wadekar is a former Indian cricketer and he represented Indian at the international level matches. His full name is Ajit LAxman Wadekar. He was born on 1st April 1941 in Bombay in Maharashtra.

 

He was expected to become an engineer and so wanted him to study mathematics. But he showed keen interest in cricket and wanted to become a cricket player. He first represented Mumbai team at the domestic cricket and then represented India at the international level.

 

He was a left-handed batsman and a fine slip fielder. His first class debut was in the year 1958-59 for Bombay team. As he showed outstanding performances in the series, he was called to play for India in 1966. His Test debut was against West Indies in December 1966 which was held in Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

 

He had played 37 Test matches in a period of 8 years and used to enter the ground as the third order batsman. He became the Indian Test captain in 1971 and achieved series victories on his tours in West Indies and England. Under his eminent leadership Indian team won more than 5 matches against West Indies in 1971 and beat England in more than three matches.

 

His ODI debut was in July 1974 and has played only 2 ODI and has scored 73 runs and his best ODI career is 67. He was counted among the famous cricketers of the nation, Sunil Gavaskar, Abid Ali, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Farokh Engineer.

 

He performed badly in the three Tests in the 1974 tour to England. He also lost in the Irani Trophy, Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy and so he had to resign the post of Indian captain. He eventually was pushed out of the first class cricket. After his retirement he served as the coach and is serving as the Chairman of the Selection Committee.
