Agatha Sangma Biography

Agatha Sangma is an influential young politician and parliamentarian of 15th Lok Sabha, representing Tura constituency of Meghalaya since 2009. It is her second term as MP and she was elected in 2008 by-elections too. She is the youngest woman MP for the world’s largest democratic nation. She is the daughter of P. A. Sangma, the former speaker of the Lok Sabha. Her brother Conrad Sangma too is an active politician and currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya State Assembly. She was the youngest minister in the council of ministers of 15th Lok Sabha who get elected at the age of 29 and lost her position of Minister of State for Rural development during the cabinet reshuffle in 2012. Agatha holds an LLB degree from Pune University.

She was born in New Delhi in 1980 as the daughter of P. A. Sangma and Soradini K. Sangma. She is the youngest of 4 siblings. Her childhood days were spent at Meghalaya. Reading and photography are her hobbies and she is deeply interested in social work related to youth, women and environment. After completing Master’s in Environmental Management, she took LLB from ILS Law College, Pune University. She also holds Diploma in Cyber Laws, Corporate Laws and Human Rights Laws. She joined the bar in Delhi High Court and also worked under the law firm in Noida, Fox Mandal Little & Co before she plunged into politics. Now she is associated with Foxmandal Little, a New Delhi-based legal firm.

Sangma was first elected to Lok Sabha in a by-election in 2008 when her father resigned from his Parliament seat to join state politics. She was only 28 then. She got reelected in the 15^th Lok Sabha elections also and is the youngest member.
