Adoor Pankajam Biography

Her sister Adoor Bhavani was also a noted character artist of Malayalam cinema. The sisters belong to Adoor of Pathanamthitta district and thus known by the tag name – Adoor. Legendary comedian and character artist of Malayalam cinema Adoor Bhasi also belongs to the same village. Pankajam is best known for the supporting role of Nallu Pennu, she played in the milestone movie of Malayalam – Chemmeen released in 1962. The popular song, Pennale Pennale was pictured on her. She died on 26 June 2010 aged 81. Sabarimala Ayyappan earned her Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress.

 

She was born in 1925 in Adoor of Pathanamthitta district to Adoor Paarappurathu Kunjuraman Pillai and Kunjoonjamma. Adoor Bhavani was two years older to her. Bhavani was also a well-established film and theater artist. The sisters were born in a very poor family and for the same reason Pankajan could study only till class 4. But she continued her music classes under Panthalam Krishnapillai Bhagavathar till the age of 11. Then she started giving performances at temples and other festivals. At the age of 12, she joined a theater troupe against parents’ wishes. In those days, joining theater and films were not considered good for girls and ladies.

 

Her acting career began with Madhumadhurayam of Kannur Kerala Kalanilayam troupe and she did more than 300 stages. In her second play, Rakthabhandham she played a comic role which was widely accepted. Later she worked with Kollam Bharatha Kalachandrika and got married to its owner, Devarajan Potti. The couple had one son Ajayan who has appeared in a few movies and serials. Potti started Parthasarathy Theaters and very soon Pankajam reached movies. Vishappinte Vila was her first release, and Kunjikkonam (2002) was her last one. She played character roles in over 400 movies.
