Aditya Vikram Birla Biography

Aditya Vikram Birla was an industrialist from the prestigious Birla family of Rajasthan. Aditya Birla was one of the first Indian industrialists to set up factories in South East Asia, Philippines and Egypt. His unexpected death in 1995 at the age of only 52 prompted his 28 year old less experienced son Kumar Mangalam Birla to take over the power. Though many doubted that Kumar can’t handle the big Birla Empire, he proved them wrong by expanding $2 billion turnover industry to $40 billion industry. More than 130,000 people are also employed in the industry that spread to 36 countries right now with more than 50% income inputs come from other countries except India.

 

Birla was born on 14 November 1943 in Kolkata in Birla family. He was born to industrialist Basant Kumar and Sarala Birla. Ghanshyam Das Birla was his grandfather. He was a close associative of Mahatma Gandhi and Gandhi was staying in Birla’s house for the last three months when he got assassinated. Aditya Vikram Birla completed his graduation from Kolkata and after that he took chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned India in 1965 and got associated with his family business in textile industries.

 

His Eastern Spinning Mills in Kolkata became successful and he decided by diversify his business to oil sector too. He set up his first overseas company in the year 1969 - Indo-Thai Synthetics Company Ltd. After that overseas growth of Birla group had a quick pace and put India in the corporate world map. In 1993, Birla was diagnosed with prostate cancer and passed away two years later.
