Achintya Kumar Sengupta Biography

Achintya Kumar Sengupta was a renowned Bengali writer who lived during the period - 1903-1976. He was a noted poet, novelist and editor. He was considered to be one of the key numbers of the Kallol group after Tagore and Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. He has also served as the editor of Kallol magazine. Kumar's first poem was published in Prabasi in 1921 under the penname of Niharika Devi. His works are included in the school and college syllabuses of both Bengal and Bangladesh.

He was born on 19 September 1903 at Noakhali town, where his father was working then, as a lawyer. His family originally belongs to Madaripur. His early life was spent at Noakhali, where he completed his schooling. After his father’s death in 1916, he moved to Kolkata where he lived with his elder brother. His education was completed there and he started his career as a temporary munsif in 1931. He served in different positions like sub-judge, district judge and special officer with the Law Commission before he retired in 1960.

His first poem was published in 1921 and his first novel, Bede in 1928, for which he received critics’ appreciation. His worked were deeply influenced by modernism, which had already swept Bengal literature in the mod-20^th century. His poetry also includes romantic themes as well as social themes. His short stories are mainly concentrated on to working class. He took over the charge of publishing Kallol in 1925. Bede, Prachir O Prantor, Urnonav, Nobonita, Akoshik, Kakjoshna, Endrani, Je Jai Boluk, Asumodru Antorongo, Bibaher Cheye Boro and Prothom Kadom Phul are his noted novels. Amabasya, Neel Akash, Purba Paschim and Uttarayan are his poetry collections. Odhibus, Polayon, Double Decker, Jotonbibi and Tuta Futa are his short story collections.
