There is no clear evidence of his date of birth. He was born in the 1960s in a lower-middle-class family in Sarai Mir village of Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. His father, who was a lawyer by profession, was killed in an accident and young Abu started a small mechanic shop to support his family of 4 siblings. He ran away to Delhi to work as a taxi driver and moved to Mumbai in 1985 where he worked as a bread delivery boy. After a few odd jobs, he entered real-estate broking and the first case was registered against him, for assaulting his colleague in 1988. Meanwhile he got married and two sons were born in this wedlock. However the marriage ended in a divorce. In the late 1980s, he got drawn towards Mumbai film industry.

He came into contact with Dawood Ibrahim gang in 1989 and very soon he was recruited by Dawood to oversee his gang's Mumbai operations. Since then, as Dawood’s right hand, he has plunged into a world of crimes – murders, assaults and bomb blasts to name a few. It’s believed that he murdered the cassette king Gulshan Kumar, without the permission of Dawood. He even attempted murder many Bollywood celebrities; a name which film fraternity always fear of! In September 2002, Abu Salem and his Bollywood partner Monica Bedi, were arrested in Portugal for forging documents. Abu was given a life sentence while Monica was released from jail in 2006. He was deported to India in 2015, where he had to face trial of several existing cases.

His relationship with Bollywood actress Monica Bedi created big headlines in the early 2000s, and he used to threaten film makers and actors to give her good offers in film. But once released from Portugal, Monica has broken up her relationship, while Abu claims that they were married in Portugal in 2000. As per news, he is to marry a 27 year old woman.
