Abu Asim Azmi Biography

Abu Asim Azmi is a political leader of Samajwadi Party from Maharashtra and currently an MLA. He is one of the foremost leaders of the party who is the president of Maharashtra unit of the Samajwadi Party. He has represented UP in the Rajya Sabha from November 2002 to Nov 2008. In 2009 November he was slapped by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA for taking oath in Hindi than choosing the regional language, Marathi creating controversies. He is one of the politicians from the state whose total assets have been declared exceeding Rs. 100 Crores. His son Farhan Azmi is married to famous Bollywood actress, Ayesha Takia. The criminal defense lawyer Shahid Azmi who was shot dead in Mumbai in the year 2010 was his nephew.

Abu Asim Azmi was born in Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. He belongs to Manjir Patti area of Azamgarh district from where he has been elected twice. Earlier he has made several failed attempts to enter the Vidhan Sabha as well as Lok Sabha. He contested for the first time in 2004 when he lost to Shiv Sena's Yogesh Patil from Bhiwandi assembly constituency. In 2009, he lost to Congress candidate Gurudas Kamat. He was a successful businessman before entering politics.

His entry to politics was just an accident. He was arrested in 1993 following bomb blasts in Mumbai that killed many people. Supreme Court of India acquitted him of all the charges after spending a year in jail. To fight against injustice, he decided to join politics. Thus he joined Samajwadi Party and very soon gained faith among Muslim citizens. Now he has gained popularity all over the state, particularly among Muslim communities.
