Alvi was born in 1927. After graduation, he came to Mumbai to pursue a career in entertainment industry. Actually, he wanted to become an actor. Actor Jaswant was his distant cousin and Alvi used to drive him to film studios. In one such occasion, in the sets of Baaz (1953) he happened to meet Guru Dutt and impressed by him, Dutt offered him the opportunity to write the dialogues of his next movie – Aar paar. Thus began the magical combination of Hindi cinema which produced many classic hits.
