Abhirami Biography

Abhirami is a very successful film actress who concentrated to south Indian film industry. She has been most active in the early 2000s and took a break from the industry in 2004 after her her family migrated to US. Most recently she made a comeback to films after a long break of 10 years. She played the role of Suresh Gopi’s wife in latest Malayalam release – Apothecary, for which she received rave reviews. The movie was a box office hit as well. She made her film debut through 1999 Malayalam movie, Njangal Santhushtaranu and later moved to other languages. She played lead role opposite Kamal Hassan in Virumaandi in 2004 before she took a break from the industry.

Abhirami was born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram and she was born to Tamilian parents. Her real name is Divya Gopikumar. She made her first appearance on television while studying pre-degree at Mar Ivanios College. She faced the camera for the first time as a television anchor for a show for Asianet. Her real dream was to become a journalist and also completed graduation in Psychology and Communications. Earlier she has appeared a child artist at the age of 13 for Adoor Gopalakrishnan's film Kathapurushan in 1995. In 1999 she made her film debut through romantic comedy - Njangal Santhushtaranu, where she was paired opposite Jayaram. The movie was a hit and she received rave reviews for her performance as Jayaram’s wife.

Later she appeared in a series of Malayalam movies like Patram, Millenium stars, Shradha, Megasandesam and Melevaryathe Malakhakkuttikal. In 2001, she moved to Tamil and later acted in Kannada and Telugu movies as well. In 2004, she left film industry and moved to US settled with a job there. She got married in 2009. In between she was active in the film industry as a dubbing artist.
