Abhik Mukhopadhyay Biography

Abhik Mukhopadhyay, also known as Aveek Mukhopadhyay is a highly acclaimed cinematographer from Bengal who received National Film Award for Best Cinematography three times. He received the awards for the works of Bengali movies –Patalghar (2003), Bhalo Theko (2004) and Antaheen (2009) and is one of the leading Indian cinematographers of the Indian film industry right now. Apart from Bengali, he has also done a few regional language films apart from Bollywood and English. Bunty Aur Babli (2005) starring Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji in lead roles is his most noticed Bollywood project. The last Lear, Khela, Via Darjeeling, Chokher Bali, Shoonya and Chukkallo Chandrudu are other noted works.

 

Rituparno Ghosh has been his long-time friend in Bengali film circle and Abhik has worked with this famous director in many movies. He has worked in 12 Rituparno Ghosh films. In this director’s opinion both share a similar eye for aesthetics, though Abhik is more minimalist. As a photographer, Abhik loves working with both natural and artificial light. Avik has tried both techniques in Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Antaheen which gave him a National award for the year 2009. The movie starred Rahul Bose, Sharmila Tagore and Aparna Sen in lead roles.

 

His cinematic journey began with Rituparno’s Asukh about 15 years ago. Their association began with the ad shoot of Boroline for Rituparno. Since then they worked together for a series of movies - Utsab, Titli, Shubha Mahurat, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Antarmahal, Dosor, Khela, The Last Lear, Sunglass and Abohoman. Patalghar and Chokher Bali are among the best Rituparno movies.
