Abey Kuruvilla Biography

Abey Kuruvilla is a former cricketer who has played in the National team in the late 1990s. Known for his height of 6 feet 5 inches, he has been one of the tallest Indian cricketers. He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who occasionally bats for his team. He played 10 test matches and 25 ODIs for team India and has took 25 each wickets from both forms of game. Thus he has taken 50 wickets in International matches for India. His highest batting score is 35 not out. Made his international debut in 1997, he retired in 2000 and took coaching. He was appointed as the national selector from the BCCI in 2012.

 

Abey Kuruvilla was born in Alappuzha, Kerala on 4 August 1968. He is a native of beautiful place Mannar. He was playing for Mumbai team when he got selected to Indian team in 1997. It’s unfortunate that he entered national team in his late 20s. He made his international debut at the age of 29. Perhaps the tallest of Indian players, though he had an excellent start, he couldn’t sustain in the team for long. In spite of his well-endowed physique, he was not an express bowler. He was one among those pace bowlers of India who played only a brief period for team India.

 

He developed his own style of slower delivery in pace bowling he received guidance from Frank Tyson during his early days. Made his first class debut in the early 1990s, he played his first full season in Mumbai during 1991-1992 season. Made his international debut in 1997, he played a significant role in Barbados Test against West Indies in 1997, though couldn’t save the match. He also took his 5 wickets in the match – his career best.
