Abdul Qavi Desnavi Biography

Abdul Qavi Desnavi was a prominent Urdu writer from India. He was also known as a critic, bibliographer, and linguist. He has done research works on prominent figures like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mirza Ghalib and Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Allama Iqbal Bhopal Mein, Bhopal Aur Ghalib, Iqbal Uneesween Sadi Mein, Iqbal Aur Dilli, Iqbal Aur Darul Iqbal Bhopal, Abul Kalam Azad, Hayat Abul Kalam Azad and Maulana Abul Kalam Mohiuddin Ahmad Azad Dehlavi are among those noted works. Hayat-e-Abul Kalam Azad, a book on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad published in 2000 is one among his major works.

Desnavi was born in village Desna of Bihar in the year 1930. He was born as the second son of Syed Mohammed Saeed Raza, who was Professor at St. Xavier's Mumbai. He was born in the family of Muslim scholar Syed Sulaiman Nadvi. Desnavi did his primary education in Arrah town of Bihar state. His graduation and post-graduation were completed at St. Xavier’s Mumbai. He joined Department of Urdu in Saifia Post Graduate College as a lecturer in 1961. He became Professor and Head of the Urdu Department of the college later and retired in the year 1990.

Many scholars, poets and teachers of today have been disciples of Abdul Qavi Desnavi at Bhopal. Javed Akhtar, Mushtaq Singh, Mohammed Naumaan Khan, Prof. Afaq Husain Siddiqui, Muzaffar Hanfi, Iqbal Masood and Dr.Iqbal Masood Nadvi are a few among those students of Desnavi. Shibli Award, Mumbai in 1957, Senior Fellowship, Ministry of Education & Culture, Government Of India in 1979 and All India "Parvez Shahidi Award" West Bengal Urdu Academy, Calcutta in 1998 are a few among his noted achievements. He has also served as Dean Faculty of Arts, Barkatullah University Bhopal for a period of 3 years.
