Aarudhra Biography

Aarudhra is the pen name of Bhagavatula Sadasiva Shankara Sastry, a noted Telugu writer of modern literature. He wrote poems, essays, short stories, dramas, translations, film songs, detective stories and a book on Chess. Tvamevaham (1948) and Samagra Andhra Sahityam (An Encyclopedia of Telugu Literature) are landmark works of Telugu literature. Among his lyrical works, his songs of the film Ramayana became very popular. He translated the Tamil treatise Tirukkural into Telugu. He is the nephew of Sri Sri (Srirangam Srinivasa Rao), popular Telugu poet. His research work, Ramudiki Sita Yemautundi? (How is Sita related to Rama?) is a riddle and a bold attempt at cracking the Valmiki Ramayana code. Samagraandhra Saahityam and Arudra Vyaasapeetham are other noted research works.

 

Aarudra was born in Visakhapatnam on 31 August 1925 where he completed his primary education. He shifted to Vizianagaram in 1942 where he joined college. During this time, he came close to Ronanki Appalaswami and Chaganti Somayajulu and got attracted to Communist party and its principles. He joined the Indian Air Force as a band boy in 1943 and served it till 1947. Later he shifted to Chennai where he worked as editor of `Anandavani' magazine for two years. He joined film filed in 1949.

 

His collections of poems are Tvamevaaham, Sinivaali, koonalamma Padaalu, Intinti Pajyaalu and America Intinti pajyaalu. Pailaapacceesu, Yencina Padyaalu, Yetikedadi and Kondagaali Tirigindi are his noted works as a lyricist. Udgeedha, Geyanaatika, Raadaari Bangla and Saalabhanjikalu are his drama works. His poetry work, Koonalamma Padaalu is a sarcastic view of contemporary society, written in a simple manner. A few of his poems are inspired from his reminiscences of the Second World War. Apart from being a good author, he was good in chess too.
