A. Vincent Biography

A. Vincent is a famous director of Malayalam cinema who has given numerous hits during 60’s to 80’s. He has also worked as a successful cinematographer of Bollywood and he was behind the camera of super success movie of Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini – Prem Nagar. As a director of Malayalam, his biggest contributions are Bhargavi Nilayam, Mura pennu, Nadhi, Asura vithu, Almaram, Gandharava Kshetram, Triveni, Aabhijathyam, Nizhalattam, Nagarame Nandi and Thulabharam. It was through his movie, Thulabharam that actress Saradha won her first National awards for best actress.  He has been instrumental in nourishing the career of Madhu by giving him movies like Aalmaram and Aabhijathyam. He has given numerous hits to Prem Nazir as well – Nadhi, Triveni, Thulabharam, Nadhi, Gandharva Kshetram, Bhargavi nilayam, Nagarame nanni and Asuravithu. His son Jayanan Vincent is also a successful cinematographer of south Indian movies who has been associated with hit Telugu movies like – Gabbar Singh (remake of Debaangg), Badri, Om Shanti and Badshah. He has been associated with Malayalam during 80’s and 90’s as a successful cinematographer.    

Though he started his early career as a film director, in the 70’s he concentrated on to Cinematography and has worked as a cinematographer for Malayalam, Hindi and other south Indian languages. Adavi Ramudu (1977) and Prem Nagar (1974) are a couple of hits during 70’s as a cinematographer.  He has won Filmfare awards for best cinematographer for the movie, Prem Nagar. After mid 70’s, he restarted his career as a successful director once again. In 1991, he became cinematographer for Mohan Lal movie – Uncle Bun. During 80’s, he has directed a few hit movies as well. Sree Krishnaparunthu – a story of fantasy and ghosts, based on a famous novel needs special mention. This movie starred Mohan Lal in the leading role.

Vincent was born on June 14, 1928 in Kozhikode. Since 1960s he has directed some 30 movies. In his movie, Triveni, top actors – Prem Nazir and Satyan have acted together. Vincent’s movies have given preference to music a lot and he has been instrumental in grooming the career of many artists through his movies.
